The awards are here!

With the Dentistry Scotland Awards just around the corner the team at the Berkeley Clinic are filled with anticipation and excitement awaiting the results. We would be very happy to add to our existing trophy collection as it is a symbol of the dedication and hard work of our team.

We are delighted to be nominated in 4 categories this year including Best Practice, Best Patient Care, Best community/charity project and Best Marketing.

Excellent patient care is the basis of our every day efforts at the Berkeley Clinic and there has recently been an example of this featured in the Evening Times. Our Clinical Director, Dr. Jamie Newlands was commended for helping to turn Marie Dawson’s life around when she suffered horrific injuries due to a serious accident. Dr. Newlands helped Marie gain the confidence to undergo the treatment she required and Marie could smile once again.

Improving patient care through Hypnosis

Dr Mike Gow is recognised as one of the leading experts in Dental Hypnosis.

The Berkeley Clinic are proud that Dr Mike Gow has been invited by the British Society of medical and dental hypnosis (Scotland) to be part of the training team that will deliver the hypnosis course to some of Scotland’s leading dentists. The course is run over 3 weekends at Glasgow Pond Hotel and includes modules like pain control, general phobia and gagging.

Dr Mike Gow graduated from Glasgow University Dental School and developed a keen interest in caring and treating nervous, phobic and anxious patients, Dr Mike Gow completed a Masters Degree in Hypnosis applied to dentistry from the University of London, Dr Mike Gow applies these techniques successfully to help patients at the Berkeley Clinic on a daily basis.

Dr Mike Gow has some exciting news…..

The Berkeley Clinic team would like to congratulate Dr Mike Gow on his recent invitation of membership from the faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) (MFDS RCPSG).

Mike graduated from Glasgow University Dental School in 1999 and is now the Berkeley Clinic’s leading phobia and anxiety management dentist.

Mike says “I have always been especially committed to the care of dental patients with anxiety, fear and phobia and I enjoy sharing in the positive experiences of the many people I help”.

We are proud to have Mike as part of our team.

The Dentistry Awards 2011

The Dentistry UK Awards 2008, which were held at the Athena in Leicester, is one of the biggest awards in the dental calendar. It attracted more than 600 people from the UK dental world. At this ceremony our lead Phobia and anxiety dentist Dr Mike Gow won the “Best Young Dentist” award, at the prestigious event.

Mike commented “It is a great honour to be recognised at the leading young dentist and is something that I have all my team to thank, without which I do not think that any of this would be possible”

Following in Mike’s footsteps Cosmetic dentist Dr Jamie Newlands scooped “Best Young Dentist” the following year in 2009 at the delight of the whole team.

Now the 2011 Dentistry Awards are fast approaching and it’s time for another win. Dr Jamie Newlands has been shortlisted for “Best Young Dentist 2011”. Our team and patients are keeping our fingers crossed and wish Jamie the best of luck.

Kat in Liechtenstein

Katrina Hughes recently flew to Liechtenstein at the request of a multinational dental company. She was one of only 5 dental care professionals from the UK to be invited. After enjoying the stunning scenery travelling through Zurich Katrina had 2 days of lectures and meetings to attend. She was taken on a tour of the Ivoclar factory and given an insight into a selection of some of their new products. Having a close relationship with a large company like Ivoclar gives us opportunities to access new products before other dental care professionals and keeps us up to date with our training.

Doc on TV

Dr Jamie Newlands brightened up our screens on Monday evening with a television appearance on STV’s The Hour show.

As it is National smile month Jamie was invited on to the show to help raise awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene and looking after your smile.

Jamie explains that ‘most people don’t know how to brush their teeth properly and that makes the fact that they’re trying to keep their mouth nice and clean and breath fresh difficult.’

Jamie’s top tips are,

1) Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes.

2) Reduce your sugar consumption.

3) Visit your dentist regularly.
