Fear of dentistry is probably more common that you may have realised. The British Dental Association stated a few years ago that ‘one adult in three has moderate to severe fear of dental procedures’.
Dr Mike Gow Clinical Director of Dental Anxiety Management was approached to write a chapter for a new book called ‘The Fearful Dental Patient’ by Arthur Weiner (ed), published by Wiley Blackwell.
This fantastic book is going to print soon and will be available in book stores across the UK early 2011.

Dr Jamie Newlands has be invited to the Sirona Head quarters in Germany at the end of next month to attend the CEREC meets CT Scanning event.
CEREC as a scanning and in-house milling system for tooth restorations is now being linked with CT scanners which detail the structure, dimensions and quality of the bone. Using both techniques in synergy means that implant cases are more streamlined and they are ultimately more accurate. This is a great benefit for patients and dentists alike.
Dr Newlands is already leading the way as far as dental technology is concerned. He currently has restored thousands of cases using the cerec system and he believes the new link between CT scanners and Cerec is a major step forward for implant cases.
The event will be showcasing the new system and the Berkeley Clinic is looking forward to being the first dentist in Scotland to implement this new system.
Dr Mike receives a lovely review.
I am a 64 year old male (still with all my own teeth) and I have never had a problem with visiting the dentist until recently. About a year ago I suddenly developed a phobia with having work done in my mouth and I became really nervous in the dentist’s chair. It was so bad that I nearly gave the dentist a bad bite to make him stop and on another occasion I actually decided that I was going home and left the chair just as my treatment was starting. Luckily I have a very patient and understanding dentist but I had to get myself sorted out. I was recommended to the Berkeley Clinic and Mike gave me a call and arranged an appointment. One extended hypnotherapy session cured my phobia and allowed me to complete my treatment with my dentist which was replacing all my old fillings. I had an extended session as Mike wanted to find out why I had suddenly developed my phobia and during the hypnotherapy an underlying personal problem came to light. It seems I had been unconsciously carrying this problem around with me for nearly 30 years and I have now been unburdened from it. My life is now much happier, so from me it is a big double thanks to Mike. So remember dental fear can strike at any age but dental hypnotherapy can really help to relieve it. And it’s painless.
Best Regards,
Nat Griffiths
Dr Jamie Newlands scoops Best Dentist – Scotland 2010.
On Friday night (23rd April 2010), the Dental Awards brought together the top 50 dentists in the UK to showcase the best in the dental profession. This year the national event received entries from across the country. In its 12th year, the Dental awards hosted a glitzy awards ceremony held in the Lancaster Hotel, London.
Nominations for the awards were collated earlier in the year, with a select panel of judges finalizing the shortlist and winners ahead of the evening itself.
Dr Jamie Newlands says “winning Best Dentist 2010 is an amazing achievement and a great start to the year. I was delighted to be nominated again this year after winning Best Young Dentist 2009. It has been a busy year so far but all the hard work has certainly paid off”.
The team at Berkeley Clinic are over the moon with yet another award.
Jamie and Mike are in London today for the final on Dentist of the Year in the Lancaster Hotel.
It’s been a great start to the year and we are both excited about our new clinic. The opportunities for helping more patients achieve the smiles they want with cosmetic dentistry is very exciting! Jamie is delighted to have made the final 8! Fingers crossed we might just take an award home to the clinic!
The Action for children Scotland women of influence awards were held at the Hilton Glasgow last month. The occasion was a glittering
awards ceremony for the announcement of this
year’s Scottish Woman of Influence. This charity raises funds for disadvantaged children in Scotland and The Berkeley Clinic was a proud sponsor this year.
As part of our sponsorship the Berkeley Clinic offered a signed limited edition Paolo Nutini box set kindly donated to the clinic by Paolo.
A smile makeover was also included in our donation. This offer of Tooth whitening, ceramic reconstruction and Botox was the perfect prize to help raise record amounts for this fantastic charity.

The Dental Wand is a new computer controlled device that administers local anaesthetic at a slow and steady flow speed. By means of controlling the flow of local anaesthetic this ensures that there is minimum discomfort for our patients.
Most people have had experiences of discomfort associated with visits to the dentist. The team at the Berkeley Clinic are always looking at new ways in making our patients experience a pleasant one. In most cases people associate the discomfort from local anaesthetic to be caused by the needle. In fact, this is not the case. Any discomfort during this procedure is from the flow of anaesthetic being too great at any given time. The Dental Wand takes away the possibility of human error and ensures the patient does not experience any discomfort.
A great number of people suffer from Dental Anxiety and the team at the Berkeley Clinic are here to help you.
