Some of the most common issues people experience in relation to their dental health such as tooth decay, plaque, tartar and bad breath can be prevented thorough establishing a good oral hygiene. At Berkeley Clinic Glasgow we understand how frustrating, painful and even dangerous these dental problems can be for your health and that is why we focus not only on delivering effective dental treatment but also on prevention on a day to day basis. So what can you do to help prevent tartar, plaque and bacteria to build-up around your teeth?

1. Regularly brush your teeth

Brushing is the most important thing to do as part of your daily routine. We recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day to remove the plaque and tartar that build-up on them after meals. It is essential to brush your teeth before going to bed, as during the night the bacteria left on your teeth can work on them for hours and cause significant damages.

Avoid cleaning your teeth for at least an hour after eating or drinking as the food that we consume contains acids. Waiting for an hour after eating ensures that the natural saliva in your mouth has enough time to neutralise the acids from the food and brushing cannot damage your tooth enamel.

2. Ensure you brush your teeth properly

Brushing your teeth might seem as a self-explanatory action, however, there are some tips that can guarantee that you are using the best technique. If you are unsure you can always consult your dentist and even get a demonstration. You should clean the front surface of your teeth by angling the brush against the gum line, using small circular movements. Repeat the procedure on the chewing surface and then use the edge of the brush to effectively clean the inside surface. Once you have finished brushing your teeth, do not rinse your mouth, as the fluoride toothpaste will provide you with extra protection against bacteria. Remove the excess toothpaste and try not to eat for at least thirty minutes after brushing.

3. Regularly floss your teeth

Flossing helps remove bacteria and plaque from the areas between the teeth and the gums where a tooth brush cannot reach. It is recommended to floss once a day to avoid the build-up of bacteria in your mouth, which can help prevent tooth decay, gingivitis and potential tooth loss. You can use a TePe brush or a flossing string to floss. We recommend flossing once a day, before you go to bed.

To floss effectively take about 40cm flossing string and hold a small piece taut. Slip it between your teeth and pull back and forth several times. Use a clean length of the string for the space between each tooth. For teeth that are close together Berkeley Clinic recommends interdental brushes.

4. Replace your toothbrush every 2-3 months

Naturally, the more you use your toothbrush the less effective it becomes in removing plague. That is why it needs to be replaced every two to three months. The choice on whether to use an electronic or normal tooth brush is entirely up to you. You should also replace your toothbrush if you have recently had a virus, cold or a cold sore.

5. Reduce your sugar intake

Keeping a smart diet is essential in preventing teeth damage and decay. Avoid snacking between meals, cut on processed foods and drinks and you will significantly reduce your sugar intake. Replace your sugary snacks with cheese, vegetables or fruits and limit the sugar you use in your tea and coffee. Chewing sugar-free gum after meals can help produce more saliva, which neutralises sugars and acids.

6. Get regular check-ups

Do not forget to visit your dental hygienist every 6 months for a general examination, or scale and polish. The professional cleaning removes the hard tartar from your teeth and is essential in keeping your gums healthy.
