Do You Suffer From Dental Phobia & Anxiety?
Thursday, February 9th, 2017
Dental phobia and anxious patients are incredibly commonplace. Although some patients express reservations about visiting the dentist out of embarrassment, many more find even the simplest procedure incredibly stressful and emotionally taxing.
At the Berkeley Clinic, we’re not only experts in dental treatment and cosmetic procedures, we’re innovators in alternative approaches to putting our patients at ease.
We understand that dental fear can put off individuals from visiting the dentist for months, if not years at a time. Sometimes, the most unfounded of fears can lead to a minor dental problem transforming into a serious condition over time, causing more stress and hassle down the line.
Unlike other establishments that rely on conventional anaesthesia, we’ve pioneered a revolutionary selection of treatments and therapies to help put even the most anxious of patients at ease, meaning even the most involved procedures can be carried out with ease.
We’re one of the only clinics in Scotland that offer patients with dental fear and phobia a full-service solution. Our clinical team aren’t just some of the best trained in the business, they’re also trained in alternative approaches to help put anxious individuals at ease.
Dental hypnosis not only relaxes those who feel uneasy, it can also transform the way those with anxieties approach dental health in the future. Dental hypnosis has a wide range of benefits and applications, including but not limited to, anxiety management and relaxation, phobia management, pain control and more.
It can also be used as a successful treatment of stress related conditions like recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis and TMJ dysfunction. Hypnosis can also be used to modify oral habits for the best, helping stave off damage caused by lifestyle habits like smoking, nail biting and more.
At the Berkeley Clinic, one of our most celebrated approaches to reducing anxiety in our patients is Conscious Sedation. This method essentially involves the use of drugs to depress the central nervous system, relaxing the patient while still maintaining a high enough level of consciousness that the patient remains verbal and communicative throughout.
There are three main types of conscious sedation, including inhalation, oral and intravenous. Inhalation sedation is one of the quickest and safest approaches, ideal for more basic procedures and a go-to for children and patients who might have issues with other procedures.
Intravenous sedation is a more effective method and produces more rapid states of sedation. It’s often used with more involved dental procedures and despite some minor side effects like mild amnesia, it’s often lauded by patients who’ve experienced it. Finally, oral sedation involves the consumption of a sedative drug in liquid or tablet form. This can help diminish feelings of anxiety and dental fear.

Visiting a dentist isn’t a fun prospect for many people. In fact, it is perfectly normal to experience some anxiety at the thought of sitting in the dentist’s chair. However it may be the case that the prospect of visiting the dentist for you is much worse than feeling a little nervous.

Do you have dental anxiety?
Monday, April 28th, 2014
Do you have a dental anxiety or fear? Would you like to overcome it and have any dental treatment in comfort? Have you ever heard about the benefits of dental hypnosis? Well, the Berkeley Clinic in Glasgow can help you.
Earlier on this year Dr Mike Gow has been featured on the BBC Horizon documentary ‘The Power of Placebo’ and BBC Radio 5. He has demonstrated his abilities to extract teeth without local anaesthetic. Dr Gow used dental hypnosis instead. You can see the video with Mike here.
What is dental hypnosis and how can it help you? Dental hypnosis is used to reduce dental anxiety, discomfort, and even can help to control pain. It is especially beneficial when the patient doesn’t want or can’t take a local anaesthetic during his dental treatment. Through the years Dr Mike Gow has adapted and developed a wide variety of hypnotherapy techniques to help anxious or phobic dental patients. Hypnosis is an extremely valuable tool that helps to make dental treatment experience more comfortable and relaxing.
Recently BBC Horizon has released a CD about the power of human’s mind and hypnotherapy. We would like to thank BBC Horizon team for sending us a CD!
Dr Mike Gow says: ‘Many thanks again to the team at BBC Horizon. It was great to work with them and have the opportunity to demonstrate some of what is possible with hypnosis on national television’.

The Dental Button
Monday, August 16th, 2010
Dr Mike Gow talks about pressing the right button when it comes to managing anxious patients in the latest edition of Dentistry Scotland Magazine
The Dental Button is a device that literally gives control back to the patient. By pushing a button, patients can stop the power supply to the dentist’s hand piece and therefore immediately stop dental treatment at any time.
The team at the Berkeley Clinic are continually striving to offer the best possible care for people who suffer from dental anxiety. We understand how difficult it can be for many people to even hear the word ‘dentists’. Dr. Mike Gow uses various phobia management techniques to help with these fears and it is very common that our patients, who visit us with dental anxiety, eventually are completely relieved of their fears.
If you suffer from dental fear please arrange a consultation with Dr Michael A. Gow BDS (Gla) MSc Hyp (Lon)
President of The British Society of Medical & Dental Hypnosis (Scotland)
