Often cavities are caused by a diet high in sugary foods and a lack of brushing. To help prevent cavities you should limit your child’s sugar intake and brush their teeth regularly.
Tips for Cavity Prevention
- Limit consumption of food and drinks containing sugar
- Avoid fizzy drinks and fruit juices
- Avoid sticky foods
- Make treats part of meals
- Choose nutritious snacks
- Encourage brushing twice a day with an appropriate fluoride toothpaste and flossing
We provide treatment of large and small cavities with every treatment being customised to the patients’ needs.
Dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth -- usually the back teeth (the premolars and molars) -- to prevent tooth decay. The sealant quickly bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth, forming a protective shield over the enamel of each tooth.
Children’s crowns are often used as the next step when a tooth is damaged or a cavity becomes too deep or extensive for a filling to be effective. It is also the recommended restoration procedure following a root canal treatment. These crowns can be adjusted so they fit perfectly to your child's tooth. They are also a great option for young/ anxious patients as no local anaesthetic or drilling is needed.
Often children feel worried or frightened about visiting the dentist and receiving treatment. A great and safe way to reduce their fear is to carry out dental treatment under “inhalation sedation” which is commonly referred to as ‘happy air”. This helps reduce anxiety in children who are nervous.
Our priority is to save primary teeth whenever possible, however there are some cases when an extraction may be necessary. After your child's tooth is extracted, they should not participate in any physical activities for the rest of the day. Avoid hot food and drinks until the anaesthetic wears off.
Preventative dental care/ treatment
Here at The Berkeley clinic, we take a preventative approach to dental care. Starting with your child's first visit to the dentist, our aim is to build a foundation for patients to achieve healthy smiles that last a lifetime. Through regular dental cleanings, fluoride treatments and dental sealants, we strive to prevent the onset, progress and recurrence of common dental issues.
Preventive dentistry for children is a collaborative effort between the paediatric dentist, the patient, and his or her parents. Along with cleanings and other preventive treatments, proper home care and a balanced diet are also important for promoting and maintaining oral health.
